With Alexander McQueen’s life and collections now honoured at the New York Metropolitan Museum Retrospective, Harvey Nichols has been chosen to join the celebrations for Alexander McQueen’s extraordinary contributions to fashion, with our own commemorative windows for the U.K.

As the only British store to be chosen for such a prestigious honour, we are immensely proud to be able to support, post humously, one of the U.K’s most talented designers with our own homage. The year’s most fashionable fete is the Met Gala, and this year the biggest night in fashion marked the opening of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, chaired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Mr. and Mrs. François-Henri Pinault, Stella McCartney and Colin Firth.

Featuring an exhibition of some of the most spectacular and intricately detailed couture creations, curator Andrew Bolton surmised that, “It’s meant to evoke a gothic fairy tale,” with the designs displayed in six different sections for dramatic effect.

With archive pieces displayed from some of the designer’s most exquisite collections, some pieces date back as far as his unforgettable SS99 show, where robots sprayed Shalom Harlow’s dress with paint on the catwalk. There are also pieces from the stunning AW08 collection, for which McQueen was inspired by a 600-year-old elm tree in his garden. This collection grew from the story of a girl who lived in the tree, emerging from the darkness to meet a prince and become a queen, and which somewhat presciently is embellished with the Queen’s face and Union Jack.

This tribute comes hot on the heels of our Royal Wedding windows where McQueen’s wondrously talented successor, Sarah Burton, triumphed in her design for Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge’s stunning bridal gown, as well as Pippa’s lauded dress in her role as Maid-of-Honour, proving that the British fashion industry is one of the greatest in the world.
