The first Koko Black salon opened at Melbourne’s historic Royal Arcade in December 2003. Shane Hills, Koko Blacks founder, had a vision to create a world-class chocolate experience and this vision has been well and truly realized with seven exquisite stores and plans for further expansion. The cafe is referred to in the Koko Black vernacular as a ‘salon’ and the stylish European decor and air of delicious decadence makes this an entirely appropriate term.

Chosen to create a salon space that reflected the company’s values of uncompromising quality, unrivalled service, and a world class chocolate experience, the team at Mim Design set about creating an international chocolate salon that was a unique experience for its clientele.

The design of these beautiful salons reflects the traditional and bespoke nature of this business and showcases perfectly the handcrafted creations made by this expert team of chocolatiers. The designer’s interpretation of the client’s brief was perfectly achieved with the creation of two stores that are warm, enveloping and showcase the product to its highest visual effect. Rich, dark timbers have been used for the joinery and furniture reflecting the richness and indulgence of the product being showcased. Caesarstone® was chosen for the benchtop surfaces, not only for its durability but the simplicity and consistency of the surface which acts as a blank canvas for the real hero’s, being the morsels of hand crafted chocolate.

“Caesarstone® benchtops provide a durable, hygienic surface for areas involving food preparation and handling. Mid-toned Caesarstone® surfaces helped achieve a warm and inviting space while offering superior qualities of durability and easy maintenance. Caesarstone® is a versatile surface to work with and maintains its luster and original appearance”, says Miriam Fanning, Design Director, Mim Design.
