CAFES! Summer Café by Dark Design Group, Ufa – Russia

August 26th, 2012 by retail design blog

Despite a limited budget, Russian studio Dark Design Group created a material-conscious temporary outdoor cafe in Ufa, about 1300km east of Moscow. Set to inhabit the space for summer only, the design was based on basic construction principles, making use of simple materials that will permit easy disassembly in the autumn.

The 70-sq-m jagged form was constructed using OSB on a wood frame. A series of frames run along a rectangular plinth which pins the form down. The wooden frame was manipulated to expose varied openings, offering a playful enclosure which allows light to permeate during the day. At night, simple fixtures light the angular blocks. The unclosed form invites visitors inside the space while allowing them to connect with the outside environment through small voids.
