BGO Headquarters by Byn, Shanghai

January 21st, 2013 by retail design blog

The offices and showroom of the fashion brand BGO – it stands for Blackgateone – occupies a 750-sq-m of an old industrial building in downtown Shanghai. Responsible for the interior design was the Shanghai-based studio ///byn, also renowned for their fresh take on existing projects. A mezzanine, made possible by a 6-m-high roof, houses the showroom, while the offices, meeting room and reception area of the company effortlessly stretch on the lower level.

The concrete columns and roof-beams of the original structure were kept visible – bearing all traces of their past – and combined with warmer materials, including the wood on the floor and the black denim covering the outer skin of the mezzanine – an implicit reference to the brand’s identity. This interplay between the old and the new and the different textures and colours contributes to the space’s dynamism and visual diversity.

The lines of the walls and openings – parallel or intersected – and the forms of the furniture – linear or with sharp edges and sculptural shapes – form a geometry that directly alludes to BGO’s cutting-edge design. Also of great interest is the geometry of the mezzanine, reminiscent of a floating balcony, providing sneak peeks at the different zones of the lower level.
