Japanese photography company Sigma Corporation has announced their newest generation of high image quality compact cameras with the introduction of the Sigma DP series. The latest devices incorporate a 29 megapixel CMOS foveon X3 direct image sensor, which uses vertical color separation technology.

The system leverages the light absorption characteristics of silicon, comprising three layers of photodiodes: each measures light at a different depth within the silicon, and each corresponds to a different RGB color – similar to traditional color film. This innovation results in realism with a full bodied three-dimensional feel.
