After the success of the inaugural Elenberg Fraser Graduate School program in 2012 (Move-in), 2013 saw a fresh batch of Elenberg Fraser’s young architects and designers ready to take on a new brief – the front of house fitout for Masterchef luminary Adriano Zumbo’s new South Yarra patisserie, his first in Victoria. The Graduate School program gives junior members of the studio the chance to work independently on a project from start to finish, including construction and installation of certain elements – an experience that also provides the perfect chance to experiment with new ideas, allowing the new generation to reinvent the architectural practice.

With the only requirement that the store include pink in its colour palette, this year’s Graduate School students quickly took matters into their own hands. They expanded their response to include signage and furniture, creating a delectable fantasy world with a slightly kinky twist – classic Elenberg Fraser. The retail experience was revolutionised using a variety of new techniques and technologies. The mirror-like plastic panels lining the interior were vacuum-formed and metallised and given their reflective finish from aluminium vapour.

The warped forms of the melting candy seats were created from up-cycled furniture adorned with self-expanding foam and silicone. Whether a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare, the results are good enough to eat. We are very proud of the Elenberg Fraser Graduate School Class of 2013 and can’t wait for the third year to get started – in the meantime drop by Zumbo to sample the visual and gastronomic treats on offer!
