Winner of the ‘Workplace Lighting’ and the ‘Low Carbon’ Awards at the Lighting Design Awards 2014

Hoare Lea’s new London office in the Grade II listed, BREEAM ‘Excellent’, Western Transit Shed won both the ‘Workplace Lighting’ and the ‘Low Carbon’ Awards at the Lighting Design Awards 2014.

Brief
The brief was to design an interesting, energy-efficient workspace for 165 staff, with a spacious feel within a scheme, which would also highlight the building’s heritage features. Within the reception, 3000K creates warmth and contrasts with the cooler 4000K elsewhere. Diffuse lines of light within ceiling troughs provide an ambient backdrop, while recessed spotlights punctuate the space.

The large rooflights in the workspace are equipped with daylight and sunlight-linked blinds, facilitating ambient daylighting to the open-plan office. Daylight penetration is supported by direct/indirect track mounted luminaires, within a suspended DALI iTrack system, incorporating daylight sensors, emergency lighting and decorative pendants to breakout spaces. Under the mezzanine, lines of light, suspended between acoustic rafts, provide ambient task light. Linear RGB luminaires illuminate the ceiling, creating a feature-colour backdrop.The media wall is a stimulating piece of light-art, with a video-feed generating ambient, slow-moving colours. This ‘Pixel Cloud’ is back-lit by an RGB pixel board array.

Meeting rooms feature the HL150, designed to celebrate Hoare Lea’s 150th anniversary. Each unit comprises a diffuse colour-changing panel, edged by a performance downlight aluminium extrusion luminaire. The panel provides up to 72 DMX channels, offering extensive scene-setting options. Behind the stretch ceiling panel, eight extrusions in combinations of two types of RGB frequencies, and dynamic white, enable the creation of an extensive range of colours. The heritage wall is illuminated by hidden T5 asymmetric luminaires, while recessed lines of light provide wallwashing.

Controls
75% of the budget was spent on luminaires and 25% on controls. Typically, this would be 90%:10%. We believe control technology is the way forward. The scheme includes:
– intelligent lighting – DALI gives ability to zone and adjust different areas
– daylight linking for half the floor area
– blinds controlled through web page. Automated timer has default settings for night and weekend.
– PIRs in meeting rooms
– controller linked with alarm system ensures lights are off when alarm is set and provides settings for cleaning, working hours and events
– iPAD control for main spaces to over-ride pre-set scenes. Technology is adapted to suit requirements, incorporating a Hoare Lea Lighting designed interface control platform.
The result is a typical total average power consumption of 7.45W/m²
