The International Center of Photography (ICP) is a leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. It formerly was housed in a two-storey space in Midtown Manhattan. Its new home is located at the base of a residential building in the Lower East Side – a formerly rundown district that has gentrified in recent decades.

Whitespace transformed the surrounding area into an industrial warehouse by creating a second story accessible by step-ladder to the storage unit above together with the use of zinc pan-decking ceiling, blackened steel beams framing, and a recycled galvanised steel sheet wall.

This resulted in a large area of tiered timber seating being installed in the middle of the floor plan. Running alongside the stairs, the amphitheatre-like area provides an informal assembly space.

Dahl pendant lamp by Northern Lighting

Although Dahl is a classic mid-century design, its minimal form and smooth, unembellished surfaces still have a contemporary appearance today. The shade is made from mouth-blown glass and etched by a surface treatment that creates a smooth matt finish.

The studio noted the existing environment of each location, developing a unique scheme that would respond to the demographic population and needs of the target group.
