Umdasch Shopfitting realised the shopfitting for the Terminal 2 satellite at Munich Airport. Highlights including metal figures, a cosy beer garden atmosphere and a modern interior create an emotional shopping experience for travellers and shorten the waiting times.

Terminal 2 at Munich Airport was bursting at the seams – and led to an extension of the terminal infrastructure. This was the reason for the construction of the new satellite building. It created an additional processing capacity of 11 million passengers per year. An underground train links the Terminal 2 satellite with the rest of the airport. Umdasch Shopfitting was responsible for the realisation of the shopfitting for the Duty Free area within this challenging project. The design concept for the shop areas was produced by Gruschwitz, the Munich architects’ office. In order to ensure that the shopfitting lived up to expectations, systems by the Umdasch partner Vitra Retail were also used.

Umdasch Shopfitting created unique highlights with the shopfitting in the Duty Free shop: furnishings of glass and wood present bags or other leather accessories. A pillar in the middle with an artificial moss surface and the appropriate ceiling elements represents a delicate flower which displays the upmarket bags in an optimal manner. Wooden retro-style shelving stages the extensive range of spirits in a sophisticated arrangement. Numerous screens were integrated into the wooden cladding on the wall and are used to play emotional image videos. The exclusive noble brandies are thus enhanced still further. Glass shelving exhibits the sunglasses and watches. An understated but high-quality stage was created for the entire Duty Free range: the products reign supreme.

The special-offer areas are particularly eye-catching. Their visual merchandising conveys a cosy Munich beer-garden atmosphere at the POS. The metal figures which greet customers in the Duty-Free area are remarkable; they represent Munich celebrities including Karl Valentin, for example. Umdasch Shopfitting developed the interior across a floor area totalling 2,000 m2; the installation was carried out between the end of February and the beginning of April.

Umdasch Shopfitting is the world market leader in the travel retail sector, with a share of the global business amounting to some 15%. Numerous projects that were successfully implemented in the recent past include, for example, Vienna Airport (Gebr. Heinemann), Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris (Coach) and Athens Airport (Nuance – A DUFRY Company). The success of Umdasch Shopfitting also extends beyond the borders of Europe: an absolute highlight in the history of the company was Hamad International Airport (Doha), for which Umdasch Shopfitting fitted out a Duty Free area of over 12,000 m2.

Further refitting projects are currently being carried out in Doha and Umdasch Shopfitting is accompanying them. The real highlight this time will be the viPOS Wall (virtual Point of Sale), developed by Umdasch Shopfitting, at which travellers can call up information about the shops interactively. The latest development project at Tel Aviv Airport was also carried out by Umdasch Shopfitting: in addition to the shopfitting, the company developed 54 checkout solutions, while three queuing lines ensure smooth processing. At peak times the waiting time at the checkouts was shortened from 50 minutes to a maximum of ten minutes.

Umdasch Shopfitting also recently received an order for two Duty Free shops at Houston Airport in Texas (Terminal B/D). A shopfitting design for classic Duty Free was implemented on an area of 500 m2. The operator ATÜ extended its range of tobacco, spirits, perfumery and confectionery. Installation was completed in January 2016. Michael Ripfl, Business Development Manager for the Premium & Travel Retail Division, commented on the order situation at Umdasch Shopfitting: “Businesss in the travel retail sector is booming – airports are continuing to expand and Umdasch Shopfitting is always right in the forefront internationally as a competent shopfitter.”
