Souvenir Shop Affenberg by Konrad Knoblauch, Salem – Germany

Around 200 Barbary macaques roam freely in a 20-hectare woodland. At Affenberg Salem visitors can get really close to the animals and feed them specially prepared popcorn. A great experience for young and old. And an experience you will remember for years to come. That’s why you’ll probably want to buy a souvenir for yourself or a small gift for your loved ones at home.

The new souvenir shop provides just the right setting. Large photo wallpaper motifs give you a sense of still being in the middle of the forest. Only the perspective has changed a little. While we normally have to look up and through the green leaf canopy with our heads tilted back to see the top of the tree, the shop feels more like a tree house.

Suddenly we find ourselves on the same level as the monkeys climbing the trees. Which is quite high up. This feeling of being in nature is complemented by an abstract forest relief in various shades of green and winding wooden shelves along the walls, oak beams that project into the room like tree trunks as well as a lot of presentation space.

The checkout is in a little black enclosure and echoes the ticket office at the entrance to the Affenberg. The theme continues outside. The windows of the wood-panelled house are covered by a steel plate, and their cut-outs are reminiscent of twisting tree branches.
