Along with the gradual expansion from cult skiwear to full men’s and women’s wardrobe collections, Descente Blanc is rolling out a retail network on home turf. The Japanese Company recently opened a fifth boutique at Mark Is, a large shopping mall in Yokohama’s seaside Minato Mirai 21 district. Occupying a 73 sqm. ground floor unit, it’s surrounded by a slew of premium fashion brands that cater to a young demographic. The interior design is created by longtime collaborator and architect Jo Nagasaka of Tokyo-based Schemata Architects, and features an austere aesthetic with a signature hydraulic system that presents Descente Blanc’s coveted merchandise on ceiling-mounted clothing racks, but also forms the boutique’s storage at the same time.

In order to implement the system, the original ceiling had to be removed and the height of the tubular lighting needed to be adjusted. Furnishings are sparse, consisting of displays, seating and a sales desk, crafted from wood and mesh steel, and have as a backdrop whitewashed walls and bare concrete flooring. The new Descente Blanc store carries the brand’s Allterrain Collection of outerwear and shoes.
