The heart and spine of Balthazar is the long black lacquer counter with surrounding bar stools. The counter spans from front to back of the space. The base of the bar is hand painted with accents of brass along with the wall panels.

The concrete furniture stands in immediate contrast to the white existing building. In the center aisle, a large communal dining table acts as a more public dining space, while large monolithic concrete booths provide a more intimate dining setting.

The intriguingly grotesque decorum is frivolously balanced out by a series of crystal pendant lamps that were sourced locally at vintage stores. Other contemporary touches include the transparent little snow globes over the bar – after all sever means north in Russian – by artist John Smith, and which playfully contain little sculptures and other odd miniscule objects.

The gorgeous colour palette gives the space a stylish bold moody feel because of the contrast with the black paint. In the main restaurant area, original features such as the stunning parquet floor have been lovingly preserved, creating a grand yet homely milieu. This is luxury turned up a notch. On the wall opposite the restaurant‚ is a surface covered along its full width with mirror panels.

Wasbar, a brand-new launderette/meeting place, is a fine example: while their dirty laundry spins, the people of Ghent can enjoy a drink with friends or get a new hairdo in one of the two hairdresser’s chairs.

Through the use of recycled and cheap materials, the sections of the pub become converted into DJ booths, lounges, dance areas, and fully equipped sand sports arenas. luminous X-shaped bulbs, blue tables, sunsails are incorporated to reflect on the simplistic branding throughout the authentic architectural fabric of the space.
