Dark green painted walls and anthracite oak floorboards create a dim and cosy place. It is dominated by a big centered generously proportioned bar which allows most of the guests to gather around the host/barman. The counter and the board along the windows are built of piled ancient ship planks.

Aria Group Architects, Inc. was asked to remodel and update four major food and beverage areas on the first floor of the Historic Hilton Chicago, which was completed by the beginning of February 2012. The former Lakeside Green Lounge and Pavilions Restaurant were combined and totally reconcepted into the new 720 South Bar and Grill.

The rooftop 25 metre pool is set in a lush tropical setting and the bar sits at the waterfront end of the pool. The main circular bar itself is a stunning focus- comprising polished bronzed metal “fins” set into 6 metre diameter “lantern” shaped structure. The main bar area is covered in canvas awnings, lighted with chandeliers, and cooled with overhead fans.

The natural raw atmosphere of the space was kept and used as a base for the concept. Floors were made of concrete and casted benches were mounted directly onto the walls. A large fire place in copper and a unique lighting arrangement was custom-made to give warmth to the industrial environment.

The 1871 Bar is industrial chic and references the main hotel colour scheme and Grill Restaurant beyond. designLSM created a raw space that would appeal to a diverse clientele. This was achieved through the use of stripped back concrete columns, surface mounted conduit lighting, brick walls and applying a palette of warm worn browns, tans and reds.
