White painted brick and stark black trim with gold lettering on windows brought a previously ill-painted storefront back to an appropriate aesthetic. Interiors with brass globe light fixtures, mixed wood tones, and original exposed brick complete the spaces’ nod to 1950’s Athens.

Located on Calle Doctor Castelo 21 is the second restaurant that the studio designs for the well-known chain of Marisqueria Norte Sur. The initial approach of the reform was to design a small and sophisticated space with two spaces, bar area and restaurant, to transport the customer inside a unique cabin.

We designed the restaurant to be as warm, welcoming and happy (and even appetizing) at night as it is during the day, and created the joinery and furnishings to look better with some wear and tear after heavy use. Natural stone, ceramic, brass, timber, concrete and blackened steel feature heavily in a bold but limited palette and we designed in a lot of room to accommodate generous amounts of vegetation in aged terra cotta.

The first objective was to preserve the atmosphere of the past, through a careful restoration of the late Renaissance structure, characterized by towering arches of the eighteenth century reinforcement. Two large rooms that are accessed from the original windows of the time, facing directly on Piazza Capranica: a huge wooden counter and red Verona marble surrounded by stools, oak tables and leather chairs.

Taking into consideration the height of the place, we combined properly the traditional materials with modernistic luxury elements. The singularity of the handmade chandeliers dominates the place, which emphasized better by the linear lighting behind the bar and the floor.

The Sipsmith brand identity forms the centrepiece for the back wall, with a 1.1 m green panel featuring a sculpted polished copper swan’s head and illuminated copper lettering. Either side of this brand panel are display shelves set into an iconic Victorian London map graphic wall that pays homage to the geographic origins of the brand.

The space concept is in between traditional Japanese sake storage “Kura” and Italian wine storage “Enoteca”. With this mix, we created a façade with the traditional Kura element, which is a grid made by half cylinder. The interior is divided in three areas: Mini-shop, sake-cocktail bar and restaurant.

Inspired by Origami, the irregularly folded stainless steel sheets are the main elements of the shop-front facade, the beer wall and the bar counter. Laser-cutting circles grow large from bottom up to the top on the one side of the sheets, lights leaking out of the circles cast spots and reflection on the other side.

The idea expressed by a “beer” arteries, which pass through the whole bar and transport drink through its “vessels”. To do this, we used copper pipes which unite the beer towers, extend through walls and transformed into light.

It was designed with two major elements: the first one is a central wooden piece which is planned to work as a large table for customers; the second element is an equipped and practical bar counter, in line with the table. This solid wooden piece clearly fits in the room.
