3D concrete printing by Bekkering Adams

Rotterdam-based architecture firm Bekkering Adams has taken the concrete dream one step further to test the partnership of concrete and technology in a more tangible way, with the proposal “Fire Wall”. In collaboration with the Technical University of Eindhoven and Cement & Beton Centrum, the prototype experiments investigate the effects gained by altering the variables of the technology – changes in height, speed and texture all produce different results.

The choice of materials palette, initially inspired by the brief, during the design phase became more related to our desire to experiment with materials, especially casted concrete and explore themes of form and frame. In fact the brass is introduced to the space in its standardize form, directly informing the concrete table and podiums.

Conceived as a decorative wall tile to cover interior walls partially or entirely, it can also be put to use in other areas, such as facade cladding. An important aspect for the design team was to keep this product as a modular system, so that the end-user can be part of the design process by choosing colours and the final composition of the acoustic cloud.
