The building unites three main functions: a large pilot plant, offices and laboratories. They are connected by transparent walkways and an atrium. A main axis provides views on the characteristic elements of the Innovation Centre such as the pilot plant, the atrium and the University campus.

Supernova conference area by Liong Lie Architects, Utrecht – The Netherlands

Supernova is a conference area within the Jaarbeurs Utrecht (the largest fair and conference centre of The Netherlands). The 3500 m2 area includes a foyer and four meeting rooms: one for 454 persons, two meeting rooms for 80 persons each and one meeting room for 460 persons, which can be divided into two smaller rooms.

A bamboo-clad canopy extends into the main lobby of the building and seamlessly folds into the centers’ shared reception area. This element continues through the space, enveloping and unifying all of the shared spaces within the program. Inflections in the bamboo surface not only allow for seating but also expand views between spaces.

Clean and austere spaces covered with solid brick structures. The powerful space called for an obvious solution: to maintain the skeleton, to remove additions and to concentrate the new interventions. The aim was to achieve a big neutral container where new timeless objects and specific elements could be situated.

The main feature of the design is a continuous counter top that embraces all sub-areas while creating separate niches. The custom-dyed leather is highlighted with a silver lining along each butt joints, resting on a silk-matte base.

The installation’s colorful and geometric aesthetic contrasts directly with its antique, industrial building, elevating both elements in a cheerful and unique way.
