Research labs and contact lenses – the client’s main product – served as our inspiration. White exposed ceilings combined with glass surfaces combine to create a light and transparent space. This seemingly sterile aesthetic is balanced by green walls along the space’s main visual axes and functional solutions which encourage teamwork and relaxation.

The principal concept was to wield expansive zones of living space in correspondence with the towering 30 ft. ceilings. The conference room is enveloped with high glass panels, thus allowing the box to float subtly into the space while conserving acoustic privacy.

Because Italy is well known for its industrial design, the team specified Italian furniture and lighting fixtures. To reference the tradition of Italian masonry and fine craftsmanship, a long wall linking the two floors is covered with handmade Venetian plaster.

In addition there were many areas where the reuse, recycling and relocation of furniture, glass systems and materials was used to meet a fast track construction schedule and the need for an expansive workspace environment. Pupa is a habitat within Bloomberg made from reclaimed cardboard and pallets. The form and aesthetics are inspired by natural habitats – cocoons, bee hives, spiders nests and weaver birds nests.
