HYUNDAI card travel library by Wonderwall, Seoul – Korea

The project is a facility dedicated to the members of the HYUNDAI CARD, which opened in Seoul, South Korea. It is a “Travel Library” and a café that have been designed with a theme of travel. The concept of the design is a “Stock of Curiosity.”

The scene is set at the entrance to the shop by a bespoke oversized book and feature display. Inside, the retail scheme is stylish and sophisticated, incorporating a material palette of natural oak, black lacquered MDF and grey Corian highlighted by brass detailing.

The shop is divided into the movie bookshop and information center, the design concept with the trace of cinema is applied into these spaces. Visitors’ sight would be drawn to the random-like located joinery pieces, which has made with the form just like stacked bookshelves.

The applications are intuitive and clean, they use a combination of rubber stamps with offset printing and the band that covers the books and magazines is later reused as a bookmark. We created a space that conveys the feeling of a sitting room – a relaxed and cozy atmosphere where the publications on display can be taken and read on the couch.

We sought to re-define common issues in bookstores, redefining way-finding with new canopies and signage at ceiling height that branched off from a sinuous central SPINE. A sculptural stair linking the two floors becomes a spatial art feature, leading from books to stationery on the 2nd floor.

KDa’s new Daikanyama T-Site is a campus-like complex for Tsutaya, a giant in Japan’s book, music, and movie retail market.
