BOOKSTORES! Prologue bookstore by Ministry of Design, Singapore

We sought to re-define common issues in bookstores, redefining way-finding with new canopies and signage at ceiling height that branched off from a sinuous central SPINE. A sculptural stair linking the two floors becomes a spatial art feature, leading from books to stationery on the 2nd floor.

KDa’s new Daikanyama T-Site is a campus-like complex for Tsutaya, a giant in Japan’s book, music, and movie retail market. Located in Daikanyama, an up-market but relaxed, low-rise Tokyo shopping district, it stands alongside a series of buildings designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki.

Occupying 2,300 sq m (24,760 sq ft) split on two levels, the store features a variety of ambiences, allowing customers to either withdraw in low-ceilinged, fully shelved, cozy settings and peacefully read in couches or easy chairs, or to wander through ample and scenic spaces.

Tanum Karl Johan bookstore flagship by JVA, Oslo

Tanum Karl Johan is Oslo’s oldest bookstore located on the city’s main street. The project is a full renovation, which means completely tearing down the old interior. From having several floor levels, the store reappeared with all functions on one floor with a stronger visual relationship to the street and more rough materials to emphasize the physical appearance of the book.

Saraiva Bookstore by FAL Design Estratégico, São Paulo

To develop in 14.000 sq ft. distributed in one and a half floors one sole store environment that would integrate the company’s best seller department (books) with the related ones (stationery; CD + DVD’s; high end electronics), creating one space devoted to the customers enlighten and fun. There is a thematic kids area on the ground level and a mezzanine that encompass a more quiet space for professional literature and a multipurpose theater, included to declare to the client that the space is much more than just a big box.

The contemporary building interior of the Bookstore Selexyz Dominicanen was designed by Merkx+Girod architects in Maastricht, Netherlands for the Dutch booksellers Selexyz Dominicanen. Merkx+Girod were commissioned by the Dutch booksellers to convert the interior of the former Dominican Church in Maastricht into a modern bookstore.

The main goal of this project was to renew the bookshop without alienating its vast and loyal customer base. Concretely, the space needed to become lighter, more functional and less crowded without taking away the cosy atmoshpere.

This design bookshop is one of the most inspiring shops in town with books about architecture, fashion, photography, interior- and graphic design. They also have an amazing collection of XL books, e.g. of David LaChapelle, Muhammad Ali (GOAT), Peter Beard, Michael Polizi, The F1 Opus, Valentino en Vivienne Westwood.

Book and Coffeeshop by MYCC, Madrid

Spanish architects MYCC have designed the interior for a combined coffee and book shop in Madrid, exposing the original warehouse structure and inserting a glass floor between storeys. The coffee shop is open plan with white walls, flooring more typically found in a garage and flashes of orange and pink.
