There is a deliberate journey to any tour of the showroom: from the reception area with its comfy seating for guests, to the open plan office and private, meeting room layouts. The showroom also includes commissioned art for the bar and glass partitions. These features give the showroom a vivid, contemporary edge.

The building engages the public realm through a tessellated form which wraps the front and side elevations, creating a visual spectacle for visitors and passers-by. This dynamic geometry wraps into the interior spaces, specifically as the receptionist’s desk, which spans across the entirety of the entry area.

Every single element, decoration and excess is simplified and dematerialized. The baroque armchairs are upholstered in velvet ethereal white, the hangers are inspired by the minimalist sculptures by Sol LeWitt and the white diffuse environment, almost optical, conceptualizes the architecture of the interior create a simple box to serve as a container for the sought after prints of collections.

This unique “Blonde Chic Feel” lighting showroom was created to showcase its Italian lighting products (which are mainly white in colour). By creating an interior space that is darker in colour, the products would stand out from its environment. The use of darker timbers, colours and bronze mirrors helps create a feeling of warmth and sophistication to the interior space of the showroom.

Allsteel Resource Center by Hickok Cole Architects, Washington, DC

A perforated black steel wall filters light from the atrium and showcases the Allsteel brand. Allsteel invented the lateral file and this inspired the choice of materials and design language. The pattern of perforations interprets stacks of paper. Between steel wall panels, back-lit images of Washington, DC reveal themselves as visitors leave.

Rather than treating the column as purely an obstruction, we were inspired by the idea of a carousel, in which all pieces work in concert. A massive steel mechanism – nicknamed “the monster” – was customized and fabricated to fit around the column, and serves as the anchor for all primary retail functions (and allows client to fully maximize the interior footprint).
