Not Just A Shop from UAL, London – UK

University of the Arts London (UAL) has launched a pioneering new retail space this autumn, selling design-led products and artwork from its abundance of talented alumni.

The new homebase of Thailand Creative + Design Center has been divided into six functional zones, each with a different focus and related facilities in support of the thriving local creative industry. also to be found across the premises are co-working spaces, an exhibition gallery offering a rotating program of events, a fully equipped auditorium seating up to 150 people, and a creative business center for business consulting, exchanging ideas and making new connections, in order to expand one’s business.

Over six hundred units of the “carry stool” were combined and stacked to form a display system along the surface of the walls. Other simple pieces from the Ishinomaki Laboratory collection such as the “aa stool” and “ma series” were introduced as display platforms for the store’s merchandise.

Comprising of a simple construction of five steel bars, x-shaped at either end and connected horizontally, this specific object has been abundantly duplicated to construct an installation, entitled unbounded, that fully transposes its original purpose. No less than 91 steel modules have been pre-assembled and allow endless configurations.

Wooden and steel tables and a modular shelving system designed by the duo and handcrafted by local Bavarian artisans sit alongside vintage chairs, whilst the calm green and grey walls add a decorative element to the simple, polished coffee machines and modern lighting pendants.

Polycarbonate shelves are used to define the corridors. Besides displaying products, the translucency and transparency of the shelves give the visual connection between the outside and the inside, and also between the corridor and the “tables” area. Changeable polycarbonate sheets can be rearranged to emphasize certain products and create a fresh look.
