A team of architects and engineers at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy have unveiled Atropos, a six-axis robotic arm capable of printing continuous fiber composites. The one of a kind robot was developed by +Lab, the 3D printing laboratory at the Politecnico, who have taken inspiration from fibres found in the natural world.
The Architech Futurist’s most eye-catching feature has to be its 3D-printed lattice sole. The plastic fibres are interwoven to provide the wearer with infinite cushioning, in a shoe that looks fit for extraterrestial terrain. In this clutch – exclusively made of 3D printed sintered nylon – a series of rounded blades seem to stem from an initial circular central point and then multiply creating the clutch, dominated by the structural rhythm imposed by the gaps between an oval shape and the next. Thus, the visual result is a pulsating and dynamic pattern developed by matching bending parallel lines, reproduced to capture the unique urban structure of the Swiss capital.
