Instead of occupying one box-like retail unit, Open House’s bookstore weaves its way throughout the entire Open House space. A tall book shelf has been installed at one end of the space, while a large double-height library wall wraps around the other. Smaller book shelves with integrated seating are scattered throughout, blending into the bar and restaurant spaces so people can browse at their leisure.

For the completely renovated space, key elements were designed and installed including a servery counter with formed brass work and hand painted faux malachite panelling, lighting by Michael Anastassiades and bespoke furniture from Ardamez which when combined set the tone for the surreal and elaborate decor.

The hallway has been designed as a real exhibition art gallery characterized by cross vaults recovered by the original building; the glass cases exhibit Amber objects laid down on Black Stripped Olympic marble pedestals. Two rooms with barrel vaults overlook the hallway characterized by a more contemporary style. The flooring in natural oak staves opens a material dialogue with the vaults and walls which are treated in hand stuccoed concrete.

The structure itself comprises a number of aluminum cast panels that allow sunlight to gently filter inside the glazed exhibition space. The extension forms am amoeba-shaped footprint, joined to the brickwork of the former mill.
