Rotterdam-based architecture firm Bekkering Adams has taken the concrete dream one step further to test the partnership of concrete and technology in a more tangible way, with the proposal “Fire Wall”. In collaboration with the Technical University of Eindhoven and Cement & Beton Centrum, the prototype experiments investigate the effects gained by altering the variables of the technology – changes in height, speed and texture all produce different results.

The gray concrete is a background for the huge network of exposed red pipes that run through the walls and ceiling pretending to be a water safety system. This network of pipes in addition to fulfilling their ornamental function, as a support for lighting, also distribute beer lines to different bars.
A winter suit served as inspiration for the material palette of muted greys, felt, flannel, blackened steel and cement coalesce to create a restrained and yet refreshing aesthetic. Mimicking the layered structure of the garment, beautifully crafted display cabinets offer discreet glimpses of colour.
