Oak makes a remarkable appearance in the surprising latticework of a long sculptured element with delicately ridged edges. It crosses the heart of the retail area on the ground floor then seems to spring out of the first floor in a sort of lattice canopy shielding a more intimate area. Blacks here, whites there, ceiling volumes competing with bulkheads, light wells and other relief.

In a singular manner, the floor, walls, and ceiling are treated in a chocolate colour which can be clearly observed from the street. The edges and corners of the room are pulled out in a three dimensional, multifaceted surface that reflect light at different angles.

We designed a large counter where they do all works such as melting sugar, making patterns, cutting, wrapping and selling. We enveloped backyard area including structural column and storage, and wrapped around the 900 mm high counter with glass so that customers can look over the entire shop.

Breaking the stereotype of brightly lit, sterile grocery spaces, Longo’s is warm and inviting with Caesar stone countertops, dark walnut finishes, and sandy porcelain-tiled floors. Energy-efficient compact fluorescent and high-bay fixtures were used for both general and ambient lights, with incandescent used only for highlighting features.
