The site was formerly used as office space. For the floor, we peeled off the existing carpet and sanded exposed mortar undercoat thoroughly to make it perfectly horizontal and ‘super-flat’. As a result we created unique random mosaic pattern-in some places aggregates are revealed, and in other places finer particles cover up the surface.
Raising the bar for modular flexibility, this piece can be used as seating (hard and soft) or storage and display. Hollow units sliced at an angle can be arranged in myriad formations—stacked, joined, or isolated—to reveal new surfaces and cavities.
Dude Cigar Bar is located on Sukhumvit Road, in the heart of Bangkok. The red bricks– a material request by the owner– were carefully rotated at different angles to allow people walking by the shop to peek into the space from the outside. The material vocabulary is comprised of teak, brick, and sand-finish powder-coated steel to keep the space texturally rich.
This shop is part of a chain of family-run bakeries called ‘Elektra’ located in Edessa, Greece. Studioprototype had the opportunity to redefine the look of its shops with this pilot project. The shop is small covering only thirty-five square metres and occupies a strategic corner plot on the main pedestrian high street.
