Aesop store, Vienna – Austria

The setting, inspired by the plentiful art déco architecture in the neighbourhood, comprises of walls covered in a calming green hue, oak flooring, cabinets, a sales desk and paneling in walnut, and all with striking shimmering accents of brass, most notably the accordeon-like cabinet doors.

An existing central column serves as a focal point, and anchors twelve silhouette-like arches that curve up and across to the store’s perimeter. These sweeping structures create zones of intimacy around a large circular demonstration sink that seemingly levitates in space.

Exposed whitewashed bricks have been paired with recycled and newly lacquered rimu timber, covering both the floor and two walls. The furnishings comprise of beautifully crafted metal cabinets and shelving, a sales desk, and last but not least, Aesop’s prerequisite shop attribute, a concrete sink embedded in a metal framework.

Two pillars, incorporating shelving, are situated on one side of the unit, while a lower and elongated cabinet marks the opposite perimetre. A unit with sink protrudes from one pillar, and a detached sales counter is placed in the middle.

The interior setting is light and bright, featuring walls covered in plywood panels, tiled flooring and a ceiling dipped in a high gloss white hie. Furnishings are simple, comprising of a sleek shelving system and a matching metal sales counter.

The aesthetic takes cues from elements found in traditional Thai buildings, such as stepped details, ordered geometry and multiple eaves, and translated into a tiered cubic structure that seemingly telescopes out from a blackened steel counter.

A suspended storage system, made partially from repurposed wood and replete with built-in sink, covers all walls, and intentionally contrasts with a supersleek metal sales counter that’s placed in the middle of the store, and a vintage chandelier by Carlo Scarpa dangling from the ceiling.

As in all Aesop stores, a sink is installed, two in fact, crafted from limestone. A fireplace and seating in the middle room is used for consultation while also serving as a place for customers to repose.
