When Interior Architects Fyra was assigned to provide the interior design for the Zalando Tech Hub in Helsinki, there was a clear-cut vision from the start: Zalando hoped for not only more space but for a raw industrial look, a vivid colour scheme based on the brand colours and a wide variety of work areas and stations.

In the downtown Helsinki harbour area, in lobby of the Radisson Blu Seaside Hotel, the success became apparent when witnessing the first clients pouring in, looking around and then proceeding to take out their phones and start snapping photos – a confirmation that the room boasting with a raw, gutsy interior had become the new living room of the people of Helsinki.

We set the brief to be an open and inviting retail space, with a bright and airy feel, while exuding the warm comfort of the Scandinavian attitude. The actual product category would be determined later, so functional aspects of the space were to be designed with an ethereal hand.

Much of the corner in downtown Helsinki’s main restaurant area has been under renovation and several restaurants have now re-opened. Among them is not just the second-floor Le Roy but also Michel downstairs, also designed by Laajisto and owned by the Center-Inn group that operates over a dozen restaurants in Helsinki.

The working areas have a more neutral colour tone with an emphasis on acoustics. A set of quiet rooms were allocated near the open plan office to provide flexibility. The quiet rooms offer privacy, as well as a peaceful place for high concentration work.
