“The growroom” for IKEA by space10

Space10 has now released The growroom as open source design that can be built with just a rubber hammer, 17 sheets of plywood, and a CNC milling machine. Produced from only one material, and conceived as serious alternative to the global food model, the design focuses on making assembly as easy and as intuitive as possible. Built as a sphere, the overlapping slices of the free-standing pavilion ensure that water and light can reach vegetation on every level.

In order to build Takayoshi Kitagawa’s parabolic shelf design, the scale, method of assembly and the common materials needed can be achieved easily, allowing it to be replicated. The weight distribution of the shelf comes from the ceiling unlike regular shelves where weight is from the floor.

A pair of handles lets the LED lamp be carried or hung, and a circular break in the grid-patterned cage allows room for the light to shine without interruption. The steel surrounding also allows the lamp to be placed on its side.

Based on the Retro design of the theme ‘golden age’ the client required the newly interpreted space design fitting to the young generation. Designer had various discussions about different culture, especially food-related culture, of different generations and made a consensus on having ‘golden age’ as a theme of the store and expanded the idea more.

In 2012 we helped IKEA in putting together a commercially strong range of paper products, such as giftbags, wrappingpaper, note books, paper clips, paper boxes etc. We also designed the store experience for the paper department with lots of bright colours and colourful patterns.
