Elephant Grounds Coffee Mid-Levels by JJA / Bespoke Architecture, Hong Kong

The project’s material signature is underpinned by dual-tones of pine timber, prepared and applied on-site by carpenter collaborators, Hong Kong-based artisans, Start From Zero. Signages which read “Coffee N’ Chill” and “Elephant Grounds” in the anteroom were fabricated by Sunnynap in Japan.

Made from birch plywood, stainless steel, and concrete, the installation generates ever-changing perspectives depending on the time of day, weather and climatic conditions. Sited on the edge of a rocky cliff and overlooking the sea and nearby city, “dynamics in impermanence” is also an exploration into how photography can break down the authentic artistic experience.

The rotunda draws daylight into the building, as well as providing an eye-catching view of the kinetic street spectacle outside. A cylindrical marble tower within the rotunda houses the escalator, while the journey upwards leads into a stepped ‘amphitheater’ populated with mannequins.
