Virgen del Carmen Bar by Estudio Arn Arquitectos, Santa Pola – Spain

Externally, the walls were found covered by different layers of paint and mortar. Internally, a brick wall covered with tiles, hid the original ashlar and masonry walls. Two levels of false ceilings placed at different heights prevented the view of the original wooden structure which composed the roof of the building.

This facade is constructed rectilinearly, though the plasterer left some strokes when he mortared the wall instead of mortaring evenly. This technique and using mortar with sumi could effect relaxing atmosphere. Moreover, the wall of facade is connecting to inside’s wall and bench.

Backlash retail store by Ito Masaru Design, Tokyo

The entrance is a military-looking antique door with a small plate inscribed ‘Backlash’, that opens to a space with a taste acquired through a series of processes over a long period of time.

I.T HYSAN ONE Store by Wonderwall, Hong Kong

For this new multi-brand store by the leading fashion retailer, I.T., Katayama designed both the building as well as the interior, which consist of four floors including the basement. Katayama chose mortar for both the exterior and most of the common areas in order to maintain consistency while accommodating each of the designer’s varing styles.
