7132 Hotel guest rooms by Morphosis, Vals – Switzerland

The designs were heavily influenced by the surrounding terrain. In the stone-themed rooms, the grey walls and floors are wrapped in local stone, which varies in colour, cut and texture. Oak panels in the wood-themed rooms were made of trees harvested from the nearby Graubünden forests.

Visitors could come into this space alone through a narrow entrance, walk slowly and circle the space with the playing of background music which has a sense of ritual. While looking through the gaps between the bamboos, semi-finished Chinese Southern lion and Chinese leather drum placed in the centre could be seen; it is like a journey from outside to inside of both your inner self and the environment.

Pu arranged for the structural wall sections to be recut to form a regular rectangular space that spanned the original two rooms. The “waste” spaces on all sides were each assigned a purpose, utilising all areas of the apartment.
