Signage system for Childcare Center by Design by Toko, Sydney – Australia

Design by Toko has developed the colorful signage system. Influenced by Children’s building blocks used to improve motor skills and spatial awareness, Design by Toko has composed fully modular timber signs. Each, unique in its appearance, can be re-configured if necessary.

According to the side you are looking at, the pavilion outer surfaces appear as a continuum of vertical lines with a different chromatic identity. Red and purple if you look to one direction, red and grey if you look to the other.

Drawing inspiration from MGS’s angular forms, and the library’s distinctive flat plan, we created a line pattern based on a 45 degree slant. This element was then played out across a multitude of sign types encompassing wayfinding and statutory signs.

The signage system consists of seven modules of frames which can be combined in different ways. Information for visitors is set in a bigger font than information for the residents.

The zoning of the areas is coded using different colours. These facilitate orientation and are already in use in the calling system of the waiting area. The colour differentiation is continued in the signage and continues through until confirmation of arrival.

A beautiful new hall has been added to the old buildings, and the former chaotic muddle of juxtaposed language, architecture and routes through the complex is at once echoed and resolved in a signage system that draws on the forms, colours and formats of flag design.
