Aesop store by Suh Architects, Seoul – South Korea

Central to the store, a steel vessel for Aesop’s skincare bottles bears not only the weight of the main counter but the store’s identity. This ‘perched’ smooth mass is crafted from 3mm rolled steel whose shade was carefully coordinated with the indigenous Korean quartz and felts selected.

In order to create more drama, an angled mirrored ceiling was installed over the bar and the signage is made of extruded concrete letters surrounded by a huge splash of expressionist paint.
Other features include the Tea Library at the rear of the store, made from black oxidized steel shelving and canisters; this dark palette allows T2’s trademark orange packaging to stand out under the intense lighting.

Walls have been left in a pseudo-dilapidated and exposed state, showing even messages that employees scribbled on them, while an expanse of tiled flooring adds further character to the retail space.

The scheme is divided into three zones; a large retail space for fashion, apparel and footwear; a juice bar and café; and a retail gallery of personal accessories and objects that acts as a connector between the two spaces.
