Shenzhen Maoshuli Cafe by Elsedesign, Shenzhen – China

We had divided the spaces into three areas: Interaction, Dining and Supporting. Interactive areas is an independent glass box with courtyard and outdoor theatre. Dining area is a open plan with bar table island in the middle, also with different levels of book shelves.

Each student was given four-, five- and eight-millimetre-thick rods to work with. Working alongside the university’s metal workshop specialists, they all created and welded prototypes, before each was coated and galvanised at the Piliroinen Oy factory in Salo.

The outfitting is playful and unconventional. The strip of wood separating the meeting area near the atrium from the walking routes is multifunctional. Along its length, this structure transitions from being part of the floor, to convenient seating, and even into functional work desks.

The result provides a new identity for the School, while drawing light in and connecting the interior to its leafy surroundings. It provides the capacity for staff, students and visitors to share a communal kitchen as part of a new flexible and collaborative tutorial and exhibition space.

NicholsBooth worked alongside a UK-based design and branding agency, to create this space that features a communal area that encourages students to interact and practice their English, while the floorplan minimizes circulation space, with all the classrooms opening onto the large gathering area.

Supporting the bold and inspirational identity of The Student Hotel, a graphic – and second – layer was implemented portraying club-scene and street-art murals instead of traditional paintings. Also old illustrations from study books, graphic blow-ups and unexpected color statements were directly composed onto the walls offering a colorful contrast with the coarse concrete frames of the building.

The sliding doors made of wood strips meanwhile allow closing the classrooms at any time, without losing the entering light from the corridor. A ‘Face to Face’ zone is added to the project to offer one to one classes for the students, besides a study area, that maintains the aesthetic lines of the academy defined from the entrance to the final classroom.
