Copper was chosen in reference to the stills used to produce whiskey at the A P Hotaling warehouse – once the West Coast’s largest whiskey repository – in which the store is located. Two of these are wash basins, which feature in most Aesop stores to allow customers to test the different skin products.

The studio, led by designer Jeremy Barbour, again opted to recycle a high volume of material at this retail space in DC. The team took 30,000 southern pine sticks – traditionally used to dry leaves at Georgetown’s tobacco barns – and repurposed them as a wall covering. The individual rectangle-section rods were cut and arranged into an uneven mosaic across the eastern wall of the corner unit, creating a “dynamic rippled surface”.

Aesop, a skin-care company out Melbourne, Australia, has heralded its first push into the U.S. market by opening a kiosk at Grand Central that’s as American as apple pie. Designed by Aesop director Dennis Paphitis and Brooklyn architect Jeremy Barbour of Tacklebox, the place takes the great American newspaper and uses it the way every American does: by piling stuff on it.
