South African Bicycle Builders, Cape Town – South Africa

As an extrapolation of the book there’s currently a small exhibition at South African market, a concept store in Cape Town that’s dedicated to local design products. Called South African Bicycle Builders, the exhibition presents a number of these classic bicycles and frames from private collections of a few of Grobler and Engelbrecht’s friends.

The interior design is kept very low-key on purpose to bring out the colours of the furniture pieces. The light colour of white glazed coniferous wood is combined with grey tones. The display furnishings are made of natural, sober materials and shapes to place the accent on the furniture.

A row of wall-mounted scissors lines the wall and serve as clothing hooks. A blend of enlarged photographs, industrial props and vintage furniture is used to spice up Denham’s shop.

Shenzhen Deli by Linehouse, Shenzhen – China

The lattice work lines all four walls of the deli’s interior, filtering natural light and views. Forming a double-layer screen, it also serves to display and hold chalkboard signage and an array of cookware, equipment and merchandise.

Metallic plastic cords were handwoven unevenly to create patterns for the jackets, tops and dresses, plus skirts with 1950s shapes. The threads loop back on themselves to form turtlenecks, cuffs and hems. Fan incorporated mohair, leather strips and fish wire into some sections of the weave to add texture.

The new store features an interior which uses the building’s concrete shell as a blank canvas. Adding a suitable rustic edge are the wooden planks used as flooring, albeit dipped in a shade that matches the grey concrete, custom-made furniture pieces and carefully sourced vintage props.

Howler bar and beer garden by Splinter Society Architecture, Melbourne

The first stage involved the conversion of a former wool store into a rough-and-ready bar and beer garden, complete with exposed concrete floors and a giant metal tree. Live greenery completes the scheme, which is illuminated in warm red tones by night.
