ZANADU Travel Experience Space by Shishang Architecture, Shanghai – China

ZANADU decided to create a permanent space where customers can experience their travel products in innovative ways, including VR technology. Value Retail, the world’s largest operator of luxury outlets, offered ZANADU a 600sqm space at the newly opened Shanghai Village in Shanghai Pudong, right next to Disney.

We conceived a fresh, colourful and soft packaging that matches the jewelry as well as the target customers. The shapes appearing on the box are reminiscent of handmade work and reminds us of the different pieces of the jewelry. In order to support the DIY aspect of the brand, we have created labels that directly include the buyer in the experience: a jewel “made by you”.

For Nuun’s first showroom, the company’s art director and founder Nourah Al Faisal called on Brunoir to deliver a space that embraces the jewellery brand’s Middle East-meets-French identity. Together with Java Architecture, Brunoir developed the concept of a jewellery box, exemplified by a double-skin partition that runs along the main wall.

The architects introduced dome-shaped roofs to bring plenty of natural light into the space. Thin light-filled slits emphasise the shape of the wells as they extend upwards. The floors below these natural spotlights are treated with beige resin, which changes into a deep orange towards the room’s borders and corners. The intention of the rough gradient is to increase the day light effect.

To emphasize multifunction for a small working space, a gigantic wall storage system with a moveable cover bored design is necessary. When the cover bored moving, it creates different styles of the bookshelf. Modern simplicity with colors of black, grey and white which made this small office a fashionable, calmness and Coziness working space, in order for their designer to think and meditate.

We had divided the spaces into three areas: Interaction, Dining and Supporting. Interactive areas is an independent glass box with courtyard and outdoor theatre. Dining area is a open plan with bar table island in the middle, also with different levels of book shelves.

The space is split into a variety of areas – a reception, waiting area, sales and meeting rooms, an area for sampling and selecting materials, a world of living and a bathroom exhibition. Dirk Hollweg’s design is based on visual perception hierarchies: bright-dark contrasts or graduations in brightness establish a sense of drama, specifically emphasise individual areas in the space and enable these to visually come to the foreground.

The entrance hall with its high ceiling and sculptural steel staircase does the transition between these two focal points. It is in this large room that wood is introduced as another element of strong symbolism and its use throughout the spaces creates a sense of internal continuity.

The design expands on the form language of the Maissi bench, using simple cylindrical forms to create seating objects that are surprisingly light and comfortable. Referencing East Asian and Nordic typologies, the minimalistic form is made both strong and comfortable by the angle created between the upper rail, which sits atop the legs, and the lower rail, which rests just in front.

Liqui created an eye-catching interior where the main feature is a ridged structure running through the length of the restaurant. This allows for products to be displayed and for a bit of greenery to be bought into the interior. This all adds up to a restaurant interior space with an airy and natural feel.
