Unplan hostel by Aida Atelier, Tokyo – Japan

As Japan’s tourist arrival numbers continue to soar, the country’s hospitality infrastructure is anticipating with a variety of new lodgings, and with the 2020 Summer Olympics beckoning on the horizon, it’s nowhere more evident than in Tokyo. Opened a little while ago in Kagurazaka, a neighbourhood steeped in history and where once a large community of highly accomplished geisha dwelled, the Unplan Hostel was launched to specifically cater to foreign visitors by Japanese Start-up Company Fika.

The lodgings, designed by tokyo-based architecture practice Aida Atelier, build on Japan’s renowned capsule hotel concept, featuring modern dorm rooms with 68 beds, one family room with two bunk beds, in addition to two private rooms with a balcony. The dorm beds may be compact in size, but have been designed with a keen eye for comfort and detail. Next to providing a good night’s sleep, each bed is equipped with a security box large enough to hold a 13-inch laptop computer.

Female-only dormitories are also available, so all guests can feel at ease, even when globetrotting alone. More privacy? Also available on the premises are private rooms with a balcony. Up on the roof is a patio is that’s open throughout the day, and it can used as a function space to hold events and beer garden in the summer time. Unplan’s ground floor lounge has a major pull factor, and is in fact a destination in its own right. The setting uses the new building’s concrete shell as a backdrop, pairing it with clean modern furnishings, and a multitude of dangling ceiling lamps and potted plants add a homey touch.

A café during the day, the lounge serves high-quality specialty coffee, and in the evening, the lounge transitions into a bar, staffed by a bartender who can whip up over 50 different cocktails. The menu obviously lists plenty of other drinks, and even includes a number of snacks.
