Other Tea bar by The Swimming Pool Studio, Shanghai – China

The inspiration come from traditional tea room, made of wood as the base material. The designer built a perfect balance by combining simple and natural breath with modern design technique. OTHER TEA located under the escalator, a sloping space was created on the top.

The design team specifically worked on the centrepiece bar, the bar back shelving and outdoor furniture, and the signage, all sponsored by Striped Horse. The rest of the interior was designed by the bar owner, Jurie Blomerus. The materials and lighting of the bar were chosen to complement the rest of Jurie’s interior’s raw and distressed finishes.

A thematically adapted ceiling element with unusual catenary lights supports the cosy atmosphere. Golden accents in the lights take up the packaging design of the products and represent the exquisite coffee culture.

Pushing the door into Cheval, it is rather easy to pretend that you’ve left some post-modern version of a horse outside, in the unvarying tension of the city, and can now insulate yourself from its mix of equal triviality and anxiety. The big window out to the street lets lots of light into the two-level space, where chevron patterns dominate.

Neutral colours are used in the interior: black, grey and white combined with the warm tone of natural oak. Black oil finish has been use to optically break up oak tables and benches, creating psychologically separate seating areas.

In our new house style red pipes have been used. They represent the pipework that runs through the brewery. Visitors see these pipes in all our communications and during their tour of our brewery. Tchai came up with the idea to use these pipes also in the shop concept.

To create a comfortable atmosphere, the walls are cladded on one side with birch wood planks, from a sustainable source, with some graphic elements that were designed especially for the project; and the opposite wall in bricks that go to the upper level creating unity between the levels.

Externally, the walls were found covered by different layers of paint and mortar. Internally, a brick wall covered with tiles, hid the original ashlar and masonry walls. Two levels of false ceilings placed at different heights prevented the view of the original wooden structure which composed the roof of the building.
