The Tea Centre by McCartney Design, Sydney – Australia

We looked at its history and traditions, particularly the rituals of brewing and tasting. This is all reflected on the layout and finishes of the store. The big departure from tradition is in the customer journey. There is no conventional counter: customers are allowed access to all parts of the store.

The coffee bean stockyard is takes up one entire wall, and includes carefully selected coffee beans from all over the world. In order to create a high-ceilinged open space, the original wooden construction required additional structural support.

The perspective along the ceiling border to the pillar structure conveys dynamic interaction. The large wooden plaque in the hall implies Eastern Heritage and thus extends the continuity of cultural connotation. Listed in a symmetrical order, the value principal is derived from a metaphor for the spatial texture of oriental residence.

The main lampshade above the counter is composed of 265 paper coffee filters glued together, creating a coffee filter shape on 5 different layers. The rest of the lighting elements and lamps were designed and produced “ad hoc” for Rosttrommel Erlangen by the local artisan, Hans Thomas Langer.
