The coffee bean stockyard is takes up one entire wall, and includes carefully selected coffee beans from all over the world. In order to create a high-ceilinged open space, the original wooden construction required additional structural support.

The perspective along the ceiling border to the pillar structure conveys dynamic interaction. The large wooden plaque in the hall implies Eastern Heritage and thus extends the continuity of cultural connotation. Listed in a symmetrical order, the value principal is derived from a metaphor for the spatial texture of oriental residence.

The main lampshade above the counter is composed of 265 paper coffee filters glued together, creating a coffee filter shape on 5 different layers. The rest of the lighting elements and lamps were designed and produced “ad hoc” for Rosttrommel Erlangen by the local artisan, Hans Thomas Langer.

Referencing the Baroque where perspective tricks were deployed to make interiors to appear higher or deeper than reality, the studio reversed such strategy by using geometric lines and taking advantages of false perspectives to make the space appear shallower and wider.

The connections between this stations and the bar, through pipes that run along the ceiling, mimic the concept of distilling whiskey, and serve as a source of illumination. The last room, the living rooms, are divided by screens of old scissor doors, which may eventually move to change the distribution.

The ground floor (the Courtyard Zone) of Ikspiari is set upon a theme a board of trade (hall), where weavers used to trade batiks, is now used as a world market that sells foods and knowledge from all over the world. Therefore, for nana’s green tea Ikspiari branch, I tried to express “color” by using “cloths” and the principles of “subtractive color mixing”.
