Malmö Saluhall by Wingårdh Arkitektkontor AB, Malmö – Sweden

The old freight depot west of Malmö Central Station was no more than a roofless shell when two siblings, Nina Totté Karyd and Martin Karyd, bought it in order to create a market hall. In 2013 Wingårdh Architects was commissioned to transform the ruin into a market hall for about twenty vendors and restaurateurs.

We used real wood on the floor, raw corrugated steel on the walls and ordinary concrete blocks as exposition furniture. steel, blocks, wood – used with virtually no processing – everything can be reused. Materials utilise their purpose: steel is leaning against the wall, blocks are arranged in stacks – without decorations or talkativeness: material + form + function.

Part of the floor is power floated concrete, the other part is bleeched solid oak parquet; some walls have been stripped of their original plastering, leaving raw bricks; other walls have been painted with a grey polymer based paint which creates a rough surface.
