Malmö Saluhall by Wingårdh Arkitektkontor AB, Malmö – Sweden

The old freight depot west of Malmö Central Station was no more than a roofless shell when two siblings, Nina Totté Karyd and Martin Karyd, bought it in order to create a market hall. In 2013 Wingårdh Architects was commissioned to transform the ruin into a market hall for about twenty vendors and restaurateurs.

The solution was a combination of a transparent working space and rooms of playfulness. To get more daylight in the environment all offices have glass walls from floor to ceiling. Acoustic plates where put pending down from the ceiling to get the proper sound environment.

An intimate and warm image has been sought, both when designing the elements as when choosing the materials. All the surrounding, as well as the fix elements, have been treated with light materials and neutral colours; while all the mobile elements and furniture play with a wide range of bright colours.

The 20 meter long facade of glass brings the city into the room and you get a panorama view over the charming buildings nearby. Concrete and glass meet green grass and an eternal blue sky. The furnishing is a mixture of designer pieces, vintage and ideas own furniture range for office spaces.

The mobility of the archive has also influenced the other objects grouped together in the center of the room. Various furniture pieces in perforated metal and painted in pale pastels give a light and soft appearance, and have handles and wheels so they can be easily moved around the room as needed.
