April 2012 — Shanghai Tang is delighted to announce the launch of its new flagship store on Hong Kong’s historic Duddell Street, just steps away from the pioneering Chinese lifestyle brand’s
former home. The new Shanghai Tang Mansion is its largest store in the world, offering multi-sensory experiences in a three-storey retail space of 15,000 square feet. Raphael le Masne de Chermont, the Executive Chairman of Shanghai Tang, said: “We are excited to introduce our next milestone. The Shanghai Tang Mansion represents our commitment as the Global Ambassador of Contemporary Chinese Chic, and we feel honoured to play a part in revitalising a historic Hong Kong street with a modern retail and lifestyle destination.”
The new flagship store is a modern interpretation of an opulent Chinese Art Deco mansion, embodying the brand’s next evolution in yet another unique collaboration with the best of China’s
creative talents. Shanghai-based firm, Design MVW, was commissioned to take the ambitious project from concept to reality with an alluring fusion of contemporary design and authentic Chinese characteristics.
Raphael le Masne de Chermont said: “The Year of the Dragon promises to be an exciting time for Shanghai Tang. We will unveil our next plans soon, including additional inspiring retail spaces
around the world.” The new Shanghai Tang Mansion opened in April 2012.
Grand Foyer
The refined ambience of an Art Deco mansion continues inside, where an awe—inspiring Shou symbol crystal chandelier hangs from the entrance hall’s double-height ceiling. Surrounding walls of wooden lattice backed by sepia-coloured mirrors reinforce the contemporary Chinese theme, cleverly creating a visual link with the outer fagade and inner walls.
The Shou Crystal Chandelier
The Shou crystal chandelier was custom-made with four tiers of fine crystals that layer up to form the auspicious Shou symbol of longevity. Measuring 2.5 metres in height and 2 metres in width, it hangs from the Grand Foyer’s double-height ceiling.
Women’s Wear
Spacious yet intimate, the Women’s Wear areas located on the ground and first floors of the Shanghai Tang Mansion are designed with distinctively feminine lines, featuring a curved ceiling, a peony brass—inlay on the wooden flooring, fan-patterned screens and semi-circular seating.
Imperial Tailoring Atelier
Sumptuous Chinese silks and European laces line the walls in the new Imperial Tailoring Atelier, where customers can enjoy Shanghai Tang’s legendary bespoke services. The classic tailor’s table is re-imagined with minimalist lines and lit up by unique brass hanging lamps inspired by antique Chinese vases.
Children’s Wear
The biggest Shanghai Tang Children’s Wear area in the world is a whimsical fantasy land for “little emperors” in imperial yellow hues. Deliberately oversized motifs create an “A/ice in Wonder/and” mood, from a central tea caddy-shaped changing room, to fantastically large antique vase-shaped display cases.
Men’s Wear
An embossed dragon, a Chinese symbol of power, sets the mood amongst the clean lines of the second-floor Men’s area. Evoking a discreet gentleman’s club in warm hues, the calm, masculine space also offers ample leather seating. Subtly dividing the space, rich purple silk wall panels highlight the men’s Imperial Collection of fine suiting.
Polo
A new highlight area showcases the Shanghai Tang Polo collection. Its unique, curved ceiling recalls the roofs of ger tents in Mongolia, the reputed birthplace of the game. The novel, custom-made display table in the area was cleverly constructed from Polo mallets.
Fragrance Bar
The Fragrance Bar is distinguished by Chinese cloud motifs over an intimate dressing table. It offers the perfect sanctuary in which to sample Shanghai Tang’s heavenly scents.
Home
The Home area presents an exquisite dining area with fine bone china and crystal stemware. A bedroom showcase highlights luxurious linens and soft furnishings.
Fitting Rooms
Designed as a private mansion down to the last detail, the new Shanghai Tang flagship provides lavish fitting rooms. The walls are lined with hand—crafted wallpapers by Fromental, with floor-to-ceiling Art Deco-style mirrors throughout.
The Art Deco Staircase
An elaborate wrought iron staircase unites the entire space. Its distinctive art deco pattern pays homage to the iconic spiral steps of the former Pedder store.
