Vocon designed the new offices of tire distribution company Dealer Tire, located in Cleveland, Ohio. Family-owned Dealer Tire, one of the largest distributors of tires and maintenance products in the United States, realized it needed to relocate to a larger space due to its growing staff and business. The team partnered with Vocon, one of the country’s largest design firms and one of the top 40 design firms internationally, to renovate the new headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio and design a collaborative workplace with an open office layout that supports the company’s distinctive needs.
At 165,000 square feet, the new space, located in the historic Victory Center at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Carnegie Avenue, offers 50,000 more square feet than their previous space – but fewer walls, for a more open feel. It also features increased natural lighting and an eye-catching exposed waffle concrete slab. To soften the interior and exterior noise, Vocon worked with an acoustic consultant to insulate exposed ceilings and install acoustical tiles – essential to reduce noise and ensure a positive work environment for staff.
In addition, the historic entrance on Euclid was closed and a new entrance on Carnegie was created for better access to the new 650-parking space garage. A “street” more than 20 feet wide runs the entire length of the building from Carnegie to Euclid to create a social and collaborative hub. On the sides of each floor plan are collaboration zones for increased interaction, productivity and creativity. Vocon’s Workplace Strategy team partnered with Dealer Tire’s project team to discover and develop an approach to this new workplace, setting the drivers and guidelines for design.
At the request of Dealer Tire, specific focus was placed on fostering and enhancing innovation. Workshops built around this request were held with the purpose of defining what space types would be needed to support innovation for Dealer, both today and tomorrow. A primary outcome of these focused workshops was the placement of Dealer’s innovation hub on the first floor, along with a fitness area and walking track to help employees escape their day-to-day settings and get a fresh perspective. Some teams host walking meetings to mix up the daily routine, while others choose to use one of the conference rooms – which are named after cars, longtime dealership customers and famous tire brands.
One of the space’s most distinctive features that can be viewed throughout the entire space is an artwork collection worthy of museum display. Owner Scott Mueller is an avid art collector, and his curated collection is featured prominently throughout the space, creating an environment that inspires, blurring the lines between gallery and office space. The majority of the walls are off-white to better showcase the artwork and thoughtful lighting design throughout the space ensures the pieces are displayed respectfully.
