Its unique culture, set in lush tropical surrounds and rimmed with picture perfect golden beaches, has made Bali a hot fave of backpackers and discerning travellers alike. And while there are plenty of lodgings for those who travel on a shoestring, there are a sizeable number of upscale places in equal measure. In fact, the latter category has rapidly expanded in recent years with new alluring hotels popping up along the island’s southwestern coastline. COMO Hotels and Resorts, an acclaimed Singapore-based hospitality chain, has been present on Bali for quite some time with two luxurious properties, and recently opened a new resort in Canggu. Called COMO Uma Canggu, it’s situated on 2.2 acres of lush ground, featuring 119 rooms, suites, one- and two-bedroom residences, as well as three-bedroom duplex penthouses with individual rooftop pools. Similar to its other properties, the resort flaunts a striking contemporary design, created by designers Koichiro Ikebuchi and Paola Navone. The design of the studio rooms and junior suites has an elegant twist, all captured in a light palette that featuring a light palette that accentuates its contemporary feel.
Needless to say, the amenities meet all standards of five-star lodgings, and include king-size beds furnished in soft Egyptian cotton sheets, ample balcony space to relax privately or entertain, a walk-in shower with rain shower, and an LED tv screen and complimentary WiFi. The hotel’s residences are at least double the size, and obviously come with lavish settings and amenities. Guests have a wealth of stylish entertaining options: a large master balcony area overlooking the Indian Ocean, a spacious living room, and an airy, light-filled kitchenette. Both of the large en suite bathrooms are furnished with freestanding bathtubs. Some of these residences are situated on the ground floor and come with a private pool. However, the epitome of luxury at COMO Uma Canggu are the COMO Penthouses. Measuring a palatial 400 sqm. (4,306 sq.ft.), it features three bedrooms, an elegant living room and large kitchenette, and last but not least, a 10-metre rooftop pool with a large surrounding deck area. The views from here are obviously to die for. The penthouses come with all the luxury amenities you’d expect to find, including spacious suite bathrooms, yoga mats, and a private butler service.
As a stay at COMO Uma Canggu revolves around blissful relaxation and pampering, its facilities totally add up to the experience. The COMO Beach Club obviously serves as a good base for a surf session any time during the day, but it’s a popular destination in its own right. Sophisticated but laid-back at the same time, it serves an eclectic global menu to a soundtrack of live acoustic musicians and original DJ sets. Fresh, regional ingredients drive a simple, modern approach in the kitchen, with an authentic wood-fired grill. The bar serves both cocktails and mocktails, while offering dramatic panoramas of the surf and sunset, with poolside seating and comfortable swing-chairs. Do we hear you say wellness? The COMO Shambala Retreat is all about hands-on healing and holistic treatments inspired by modern science and ancient Eastern wisdom. A team of experts provide wellbeing classes, including yoga and pilates. And that’s not all. a variety of massages, facials and beauty treatments are also available, utilising carefully selected products and COMO Shambhala’s signature blends of essential oils. The wellness centre offers eight discrete treatment rooms — including two double rooms for couples’ treatments.
