The Gala Mall in Lujiazui, Shanghai, at the intersection of the city and the waterfront, is a new landmark embracing the breathtaking scenery of the Huangpu River and the surrounding greenery. Lujiazui was once Shanghai’s gateway, with a number of shipyards serving millions of travelers since the mid 19th century. JATO Design has made it its goal to revive the area’s historic value and reconnect the surrounding new developments as a social interchange.
Defying the rigid stereotype of shopping-mall design, the mall has a maritime atmosphere that is dynamic, adventurous and experimental. From hanging bridges to details such as elevator buttors, the design elements suggest an imaginary sea voyage on a cruise through the shipping industry.
