Kengo kuma has collaborated with sportswear brand Asics to offer a new take on its Metaride AMU silhouette. The sneaker, which echos the architects signature style, features an upper constructed of a white performance knit layered with interwoven synthetic strips. It’s crisscrossing pattern was inspired by a traditional Japanese bamboo crafting technique known as ‘yatara knitting’.
Kuma‘s first-ever footwear collaboration presents an environmentally-friendly Metaride design. Building on Asics most technologically advanced running shoe, Kuma combines a performance monosock with overlays that are strategically placed to hold the foot steady. A toggle lacing system secures everything in place and the strips cleverly form an Asics graphic on the midfoot.
The sole is split into two parts. A tan midsole that is made of an ecologically-conscious wood-derived textile, and a clean white outsole. A shock-absorbing material gel placed on the heel compliments a two-part ortholite and cork insole to enhance cushioning when landing.
Kengo Kuma’s Asics Metaride AMU will release exclusively in japan and be available on the Asics’ website as well as select retail locations in Harajuku and Osaka from December 20, 2019. The price is ¥36,000 JPY, which is approximately $330 USD.
