Originally founded in 2013 as Calico Jack by Dutch entrepreneurs Rolph van Heyster and Erik Morrenhof, its new identity Calico Club / emerged after last year’s takeover by fashion retailer Van Tilburg. The newly attained synergy not only kept the aforementioned on board, but also spawned an alluring new flagship store in Nistelrode, a sleepy town in a remote corner of the Netherlands. Occupying a redeveloped farmhouse and adjacent barn built in 1934, the lofty 272 sqm. (2,928 sq.ft.) retail space has been designed by Amsterdam-based design and architecture practice Barde vanVoltt. The chosen aesthetic aims to create an extraordinary, if not elevated, shopping experience and pairs the building’s original architectural elements with a series of modern interventions, while also loosely blending in elements taken from Japanese culture. The front yard, now landscaped with large rocks in an austere Zen-inspired setting, signals shoppers from afar what’s to be found inside.
A ceiling with exposed wooden beams, white stuccoed walls and flooring comprised of sinuous patterns and materials, form the backdrop of modern furnishings and fixtures, most notably a large curved partition and displays clad in glistening rippled mirror glass. A palette of natural materials, such as dark walnut and linen, and captured by a custom-made sales counter, cabinets, fitting rooms, and suspended canopy-like volumes, balance out the austerity, but also lend the premises a warm and welcoming allure. And yes, the indoor setting is dotted with chunky rocks as well, used alternately as displays, and tying it in with the front courtyard. Another element more boldly referencing nature is a lush Japanese tree encased in a circular glass bench. The newly opened Calico Club / carries a tightly curated mix of high-end and premium men’s collections from across the planet, and includes brands such as Marni, Suicoke, Stone Island, AMI, Heron Preston, and A-COLD-WALL*.
