For quite some time, Oslo has been on a roll, in luxury shopping that is. One revered brand after another has landed in the Norwegian capital, and the latest one boosting its stature as one of Scandinavia‘s leading shopping destinations, is the house of LOEWE. The Madrid-based luxury brand has opened up shop on the premises of Steen & Strøm, one of the planet’s oldest department stores, in the heart of the city. Occupying a 154 sqm. (1,658 sq.ft.) ground floor unit with a street entrance of its own, the retail space features an interior design that’s inspired by creative director Jonathan Anderson‘s Casa LOEWE flagship store concept. Hand-crafted enamelled blue tiles, a striking design element which references LOEWE‘s Spanish roots, form a backdrop for the shop windows, but also frame the indoor entrance and extend further inside in green, amber and off-white. The latter material is captured by volumes featuring both recessed shelving and tiered shelving units, paired with shelving and displays in a neutral shade.

Signature furniture pieces further accentuate the inviting space, such as an angular Steltman and Utrecht chairs designed by Dutch designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld, alongside LOEWE’s black iron martini tables and podiums crafted in glass, ceramic, and slabs of Italian marble. Blended into the settings is a selection of works from the brand’s international anthology of art, sculpture and craft that aim to elevate the shopping experience. Curated by Anderson and hand-picked for the new retail space, the works include Japanese sculptor Hafu Matsumoto’s intricately woven leather basket and Irish wood turner Brendan Hogg’s mesmerising pieces Mandiba and 1916 Rising. Two wool carpets with pastoral scenes reminiscent of Norway’s majestic landscape are designed by textile artist John Allen and handmade in Spain. The new LOEWE store carries the brand’s coveted women’s apparel, accessories, bags and shoes.
